Great news have arrived from Argentina: the short films Ashen (Cenizo) by Jon Mikel Caballero —coming from actress Ainhoa Tornero— and Voyage Spatial (Viaje espacial intergaláctico) by Guillermo A. Chaia have achieved recognition at the Festival Fantástico Mar del Plata.
An award to Ashen (Cenizo) by Jon Mikel Caballero and a Special Mention to Voyage Spatial (Viaje espacial intergaláctico) by Guillermo A. Chaia, both short films have been awarded at the 1st Festival Fantástico Mar del Plata - Festival Internacional de Cine Fantástico de Mar del Plata 2016 (Mar del Plata, Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina).
In the case of Ashen, the short directed by Jon Mikel Caballero, the award has gone to the leading actress Ainhoa Tornero. Ainhoa Tornero has won the Best Female Actress Award of the Fantastic Short Film International Competition. The short Ashen stars Adam Quintero and Ainhoa Tornero, whose acting has already been recognised by the Festival Fantástico Mar del Plata.

In addition, the Jury of the Fantastic Short Film International Competition has decided to give a Special Mention, initially not provided, to Voyage Spatial, the story filmed by Guillermo A. Chaia in Canada. The members of the Jury have emphasized the "originally shown by applying the idea of voyage beyond space and time coordinates" (in Spanish: "la originalidad mostrada al aplicar la concepción de viaje más allá de las coordenadas tiempo - espacio").
The first edition of the Festival Fantástico Mar del Plata was held in Mar del Plata (Argentina) from 12th September until last Sunday 18th. During these days of festival, Ashen by Jon Mikel Caballero and Voyage Spatial by Guillermo A. Chaia were taking part in the Fantastic Short Film International Competition of the first Fantástico Mar del Plata. Both shorts were screened during the first day of this new film festival, on Monday 12th September, as part of the same screenings session at the Teatro Carreras.
The list of winners of the Fantastic Short Film International Competition of the 1st Festival Fantástico Mar del Plata 2016 included the following awards:
- Best Short Film Award: They Will All Die in Space by Javier Chillon (Spain);
- Best Film Director Award: Javier Chillon for They Will All Die in Space (Spain);
- Best Screenplay Award: Javier Chillon for They Will All Die in Space (Spain);
- Best Male Actor Award: Mikel Bustamante for Apolo 81 (Spain);
- Best Female Actress Award: Ainhoa Tornero for Ashen by Jon Mikel Caballero (Spain);
- Best Editing Award: Jota Aronak for Súper Cool;
- Best Sound Award: J. L. Canalejo for Mr. Dentonn;
- Best Cinematography Award: Rita Noriega for Domingo el Amanecedor; and
- Jury's Special Mention: Voyage Spatial by Guillermo A. Chaia (Spain).
Apart from this competition, the festival also presented other categories —Fantastic, Horror, Animation, Film Noir, in their own full-length and short film sections and divided into Argentinian competitions and international competitions. The awards of these additional categories have already been announced too.
